1927 Bungalow (with photo)-What Style?
We have not been able to figure out the style of our 1927 bungalow. It has 3 bedrooms (2 upstairs), 1 bathroom (downstairs), living and dining room in front, kitchen, breakfast nook, and mudroom in back. The upstairs deck is not original and we think it was added in the 80s. Thanks for any ideas!

I think it is a very cute Colonial Revival bungalow with a shed dormer and clipped gables. I say Colonial Revival because of the fan light over he front door and the columns and arched entry cover. I agree that the upstairs deck was a later alteration, but it actually looks pretty good. Very nice house!

That is a stunning house. I love the windows (especially that oh, so subtle arch in the ganged windows of the shed dormer) and the balcony tucked up in the roof. Jennifer is correct with the Colonial Revival designation by the entry detailing. Also I think the overall form is sometimes termed a Continental or Germanic cottage-similar to a Cotswold but the Jerkinhead or clipped Gables have architectural influences from cottages one might find in the German countryside. Your cottage could be in a painting. Love it!

Thank you Jennifer! I looked online and yes, our home does look like a colonial revival. When we bought it, the exterior paint was beige and the trim was green. The fan-light was painted one color and you couldn't really see the details. So, when we painted it last summer, I wanted to do contrasting colors to bring out the details. I love how the chocolate brown and white really makes it stand out. Thanks again for your thoughts.

SPS-Thanks for your comment and thoughts! When we painted our home last summer, our neighbor commented that it looked like it belonged in a storybook-kinda fairy tale like. That made us really happy to hear-and thanks for saying it looks like it should be in a painting! We think so too-we were just really pleased with how the new colors looked. This home needed some TLC and we are looking forward to restoring it back to it's bungalow glory. Here is how it looked before we painted it:

Beautiful. Your nice brown paint w/ white highlights is fantastic. I like the upper deck space.

What a wonderful, transformative paint job. FYI, your home might also be termed a Dutch Colonial.

TGS-thanks for the compliment! It's amazing what some paint can do to a home's exterior! Thanks for mentioning "Dutch Colonial". I will look into it!

Marcos-Thanks for your comment! I love how the white trim really brought out the accents on the house.

Yes, the trim is very nice. My new home, also built in 1927, is brick so just a little trim work for us. I enjoyed looking at your blog. That is a fun idea that I am thinking about copying. I showed your pics to my wife who is from the Pacific North/West. Your beautiful view of the Sound made her homesick. Cya

There is so much improvement shown in the after picture compared to the before...I can't find the words. BEAUTIFUL house! Good choice!
