Is this a bunglow?
http://picasaweb.google.com/MarciaAndJim/FarmHouse02 This house came with a few acres of land. We originally thought we'd tear it down but it's growing on us. It has hardwood - oak, I believe - floors downstairs and pine floors upstairs. Wide pine woodwork around all windows and doors. Built in cupboard with glass front in dining room, glass parlor doors, built in pine cupboard in bathroom hall, pine stairs and bannisters to upstairs, and a swinging door between kitchen and dining room. I believe the kitchen cupboards are original also. the only woodwork that has been painted is the kitchen trim and cupboards. If anyone can help me identify the style and perhaps source of this house built in 1928, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Re: Is this a bunglow?
I would definitely call that a bungalow. I wouldn't tear it down unless it was ready to fall down. I wish I could have found that style here when I was looking for a bungalow, but settled for a pseudo-prairie style 1939 house. Which is nice, but I have always liked a 2nd story (probably because where I was raised I didn't have one!) Even if it isn't your primary residence, it would be a nice house to either rent or have as a guest house.

Re: Is this a bunglow?
I think that with a little TLC it'll be a beautiful bungalow with a lot of original detail. I'd love to have a house like that with that acreage. I see that's it's located in England. That particular style I always associated with the States (a la Sears Catalog, etc.). Are there many bungalows like this in England? I don't recall seeing any on my travels there. Diane

Re: Is this a bunglow?
Thank you both for your replies. It is in Southeast Nebraska, USA. This is my first attempt to post pics online and I must have missed something. Where did you see the England reference? I'll try to fix it if I can find it. Since it's in the USA, could you venture a guess as to the maker and model? It was on the edge of serious damage when we bought it this spring. We have had the roof re-shingled, and new gutters. The roof had two layers of cedar shingles under two layers of asphalt shingles. We put asphalt back (what we could afford). We also did some dirt work around the foundation to improve drainage. The next step is to replace the wooden piece that holds up the windows on the N side of the house, (Stoop?) as they are all rotted out. Then the place will be water tight. We do use it as a weekend getaway, and are considering renting it as a retreat for bird watchers or writers, etc. It's very remote and peaceful. What do you think? Would someone want to spend a week or a weekend in nearly total quiet? All you can hear is the wind in the trees, and the birds singing. The road is down at the bottom of the hill far from the house. Depending on the time of year, two to 10 vehicles go by in a day. I'll take a couple interior pics this weekend and post them.

I think I fixed the location problem
Let me know if it still gives the "England" impression. Thanks!

Re: I think I fixed the location problem
I think it was in Picassa that fixed the location of the album to somewhere in Southeast England. I should have guessed it was wrong. Didn't much look like England in the album. LOL... Diane

Interior pictures available
I posted a few pictures of the interior in the same album. http://picasaweb.google.com/MarciaAndJim/FarmHouse02 I forgot to take a picture of the little wooden framed medicine cabiinet in the bathroom. Can anyone give me clues as to its origins? I've searched some of the catalog sites and can't find it. Thanks!

Re: Interior pictures available
What a great house! All of the built in's are still in place (and not painted), as well as the old wood floors and original windows and light fixtures. What a wonderful find....I really like the view of the back barn. Great house! Are you going to post the photos of the cabinet?

Re: Is this a bunglow?
That sounds WONDERFUL to me! One of the most memorable vacations I had was with my sister. We rented a 200 year old cabin in Hocking County, OH. It had an outhouse and a couple of outlets (one light, an old, OLD refrigerator -- one with rounded corners and no freezer). Anyway, I absolutely loved it. When the lights went out it was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Your description reminds me of that week (indoor plumbing is a big plus..the outhouse wasn't well maintained in my case!). I would love to sit on your porch and read and/or relax. I would think there would be a market for it. Deb

Thanks for the feedback
Everyone, thanks for the feedback and encouragement. We'll post progress a couple times a year. As it is a hobby house and there are too many fun things to do when we're there, it's going to be slow going! PS if anyone sees a reference to a similar house that might give us a clue as to its style name or source, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Still Looking for Writers Seeking Refuge???
Please send me a pm - I'm looking for a real place to get away (I don't even need a phone line or tv) once a year to get in some personal writing and photography. I live in the Midwest, so it might not even be too difficult to arrange. Let me know. BTW - that's a wonderful house you have. I'm glad you didn't tear it down! City Girl Longing for The Country

Re: Is this a bunglow?
Well, I can't be of much help except to say that my house looks VERY similar to this one. There is no real railing between the porch columns (except for some black pseudo-wrought iron business that someone added at some point). I'm still researching to find out more about mine. I'll post here if I find anything. Obviously the style got around - I'm in Louisiana!

Re: Is this a bunglow?
Yes, It's a bungalow.I'll have to look through some reprints I have from Dover Publications to get an idea where it might have come from. It might be a Bennet Brothers home from New York.I think they were in Lackawana. They made precut homes like Aladdin, Gordon van Tine, L.E.Crain of Houston,Tx. and various other companies. Will get back to you on this.
