We are looking for an old house to restore. Found this home yesterday. The house is in a good location, but needs a LOT of work! We are thinking of remodelling it to a point where we can move in and finish the work. But for now live in our current home until this one is livable. (The house also has a large separate garage with appartment above it, which is a great plus.)
In the living room, it has a fireplace with built-ins on either side and small windows above each built-in. It has pretty woodwork on the facade.

I believe this is a bungalow, but I am not familiar with these homes. I'm very glad to have found your forum. If you have any thoughts on what year it might have been built, what style (is it a craftsman bungalow?), etc., and any tips on restoring a house like this, pluses and minuses, I'd appreciate any info you can give me.

Based on the photo and your description of the interior, this house is definitely a craftsman bungalow. Because of the separate roof over the porch, it is an example of a gable front bungalow. The fireplace surrounded by built-in bookcases with windows above is classic craftsman bungalow. The clipped gable roof, sometimes called a jerkin roof, is a style that has its origins in Holland and Germany. The house might have been built at any time between about 1910 and 1930, depending largely upon what part of the country it is in, and might be a kit house.

Restoration tips? As a general rule, consider yourself fortunate to have original features that escaped earlier concepts of "improvement," and, where at all possible, live with the house for a while before making big changes.
