Post Keep the single pane windows?
I've done a lot of searching around the site and found a lot of usefull info. I just purchased a 1918 Craftsman bungalow in the East Hill area of Pensacola. It was an awesome deal but the house is a MAJOR remodel job. I have a couple questions for your input:

1. The house has the original single pane windows. They dont have any special designs etc but they are the originals with wood frames. Some have busted panes and all of them need to be repaired/repainted. Would you opt for window pane replacement and repairing the necessary parts or replacing all the windows with more energy efficient double pane ones?

2. The kitchen has been gutted so I'm starting from scratch. It seems that wood counters would have been the standard countertop for the time? I want to keep the remodel as era appropriate as possible.

3. The baths need to be gutted so I'll need new hardware etc. It looks like the original plumbing fixtures would have been chrome or polished nickel? The rest of the house should be bronze, correct? I was thinking oil rubbed bronze would look good with brushed nickel or chrome in the kitchen and baths.

I'm open to any answers and suggestions. Thanks!

I've attached a couple photos of the new home for you all to see.

As far as the windows go do a search in this forum on Window restoration. There is a strong leaning to preserving the original windows and not replacing with vinyl replacement windows. Even if they are simple one over one double hung windows, keeping the original windows is in my opinion a critical part of preserving the heritage of the house. I won't go into a long reiteration of the pros/cons here. You can do a search and find a lot of good info the value of preserving the windows. If you can't find the info, post back I will give you some links to some informational sites. One tip here is buy Terry Meany's book on wood windows. They are so simple to work on that even I can do it. :-)

Windows are the eyes of your home -- you'll never duplicate the original look, matter how much you pay. We have a 1924 A&C bungalow at 53ยบ N latitude here in Canada and the original single pane (4 - 6 over 1) windows with the storms (1 over 1) keep us snug.
