Clues to my house's built date.
I'm trying to find any clues to when my house was built. Tonight, while doing a walk-around, I noticed the coal chute door. I knew it was there but now noticed it read "Majestic" and has a date of 1926 cast in to it. My house uses hot water heat so it has a boiler system, not the origianl, but the original would have run off of coal. Is it most likely that this chute door was installed at the time the house was built? The house also has a fireplace in the living room and a 2nd chimney (walled over) between the kitchen and dining room. Would this have been for a wood stove for cooking or would they have had a gas stove in the mid 20s and vented out a chimney?
Also, I noticed 2 bricks on the front steps piller that were installed backwards so the makers name is showing. They read FAIRFIELD ZOAHVILLE OHIO. I haven't been able to find any info on the Fairfield Brick Co, as to when it exsisted. Oddly though, my house is near Bay City and I believe it was built by the owner's father who owned a lumber mill in Bay City (A & A Mller). I know that Saginaw had a brick co. so I'm surprised that they didn't get the bricks from there, unless the Saginaw Co. wasn't in business yet.
I'm hoping someone can shine some light on this for me.
