Post Picture Railing Question
Traditionally, is picture railing ever found in kitchens or bathrooms? Those are the only rooms where my bungalow does NOT have it and I'd like it there too!
Kris (another one)
1926 bungalow, Atlanta

Post Re: Picture Railing Question
My new bungalow has it in all rooms save the foyer, bathroom & kitchen.

Another question- mine is painted, though all other woodwork in the house is natural. Would the picture rail also have been natural? And it is possible to strip it without taking it off the wall?
I have never seen original picture rail in bathrooms or kitchens. Maybe people didn't hang pictures in those rooms. So, it's probably not "period". If you plan to hang pictures from it, put it up. It will protect the plaster. But if you just want those rooms to match the rest of the house, I'd leave it off.

Post Re: Picture Railing Question
My bungalow in Chicago does not have it in the kitchen or bath. But it's in the foyer and hallway. In the front of the house, it's incorporated with crown molding. In the bedrooms and back hallway, the picture rail goes solo as the molding.

Question: we converted one of the front bedrooms into public space. We had crown and ceiling molding milled to match the original (in DR & LR), and now we'll add-back the original picture rail to these pieces. The groove in my old picture rail was filled in with spackle(have no idea why) years ago - but we'd eventually like to make that functional again too. Where do you purchase the hooks for picture rail? I'm trying to determine how much of a gap I need between the crown and the picture rail when installing so it will be functional.
My picture rail is about 1/2" below the ceiling, but I have seen it up to 18" from very high ceilings. When the railing is lower it tends to runs level with the tops of the windows and door frames.

You can buy picture rail hooks from Van Dykes Restorers (www.vandykes.com), www.antiquehardware.com and from Historic House Parts, which has the best selection (http://www.historichouseparts.com/picture_hangers.asp).
