Post Restoration Hardware furniture: experience/comment
I've been looking for Arts & Crafts / Mission bedroom furniture and so far due to price and selection I've decided to go with Restoration Hardware. They purchased Michaels Furniture and are the sole distributor. Warren Hile furniture looks good quality wise but they are limited in furniture selection and priced rather high. I've found "Mission" furniture by other manufactures but I don't know that the quality will be good. (Style Master's "Mission Viejo")
Does anyone have any comments on Restoration Hardware's furniture or recommendations of other manufactures?
Thanks
http://www.restorationhardware.com/index.htma/subdepartment.html?department=6&subdepartment=40

I have always thought Restoration H'ware to be a little pricey. Much of the same is available for less at Jordan's furniture for less, but their stores are located in New England only. Also you can get period pieces for about the same cost, with some variation in condition. Personally I would prefer the real stuff, dings and all, to new pieces. I recently found a typical period settee for $150 and matching chair for $100. I only had to replace the leather seats, which is a breeze with real mission construction.

Nicola

We've purchased a Michael's bedroom set and a dining room set, both before Restoration acquired the line. Excellent quality and workmanship. We also recently purchased a complete living room set from Warren Hile (through a distributor here in Southern California). The Hile furniture is especially nice because although it is pretty consistent with Stickley style, it can be ordered with a variety of wood finishes and different leathers. That way, your furniture dosen't look like it all came out of the same catalog! A real good mix with Michaels and Hile. The other stuff we've seen locally just does not have the quality look. I suppose its just another case of getting what you pay for.

Another catalog that has inexpensive mission style furniture is "Home Decorators Collection." I don't vouch for quality as I have never ordered anything from them but their prices are great in comparison to other places. They also have lots of other interesting home (bungalow-style) items outside the mission furniture stuff. The web site is www.homedecorators.com and their telephone number is 800-245-2217.

In our search for "stuff like Stickley" my wife and I came upon a Stickley authorized showroom (Bograd's in North NJ). After realizing the nominal price difference compared to other high end A&C style furniture, we ordered a full dining room set on the spot. We just ordered Harvey Ellis bedroom items. There is nothing closer this side of the antique market. You do get what you pay for, and the service is tops.

I have a couch from Restoration Hardware (made by Michael's). I like the couch very much, but I absolutely HATE Restoration Hardware. Honestly, I think they have dreadful customer service, and I will never buy another thing from them as long as I live. I bought a slipcover couch from them a couple years ago. They stopped carrying the couch, and also stopped carrying their slipcovers. They offered to order me a slip cover for twice the price, though! They don't do transfers between stores at all, and the people who work in the RH near me are rude and unhelpful. Sorry, I'm crabby today, but I would recommend you try to find someone in your area who carries Stickley furniture or go for a local craftsperson! Good luck!

I purchased a michaels dining room hutch from an independent new england furniture store. Must have been before the acquisition. I recently have seen stickley style furniture- new i.e. restoration hardware-for sale on e-bay-this was just last week. you can also find some nice antique mission style furniture on e-bay as well. I have bought some with good success.

For the same amount of money, you can buy Stickley reproductions from Stickley. They use quartersawn oak or cherry, whereas the stuff from Restoration Hardware is made of regular oak.
