Suggestions for replacing sliding closet doors
Please help me recover from a previous owner's blunder. At some point in my home's history someone decided to remove the single door and a bunch of the wall of my front bedroom's closet. Besides the horrible plaster job, they framed the opening with what looks like construction grade 1 x 6 and put in a set of gold trimmed mirrored sliding doors. I'm not planning on putting the single door back as it is rather nice to have that level of access to the (rather generous) closet, but I am thinking about what to replace the sliding doors with. What would you suggest? The opening is 66" wide by 80" high. I was thinking a pair of french doors with frosted glass panes would look nice and would be appropriate to the period of the home. Thanks, Duane

The Simpson Door Company ( www.simpsondoor.com) makes some nice bi-fold doors for closets that would fit well in a bungalow.

Re: Suggestions for replacing sliding closet doors
I was in a bungalow once that used standard reclaimed interior doors -- stripped to the bare wood and sealed. They were hinged on the sides so they opened like a book. There was some device that sort of "snapped" them shut. They used this in a part of the hall that they had walled off for laundry. I'm thinking a bit of built-up casing and a couple 30" doors like that -- or the French doors you suggested -- would look good. You could also put a piece of fabric behind the french door panes if you don't want to frost them. Good luck!

Re: Suggestions for replacing sliding closet doors
The French door idea is a good one. So is the bifold. I think Wood Harbor also makes bifolds in a variety of panel configurations so you could try and match the other doors in your house. You could also get two doors that match the style of your other interior doors. That would take up a little more room than bifolds, but can work ok. We have those in one of our closets. You can get doors in 30 or 32 widths which would allow you to trim the opening. Again Wood Harbor, Woodport or Simpson all make good doors in a variety of styles. I think that which ever type of door you choose, trimming the opening in a manner that matches the other doors will be the key to making it look "finished".

If your room is big enough, you could go with panel doors to match the door to the room.

All the suggestions sound great.. The only other thing i can add is maybe a dressing screen style door.. You have seen the old tri fold dressing screens.. It would allow partial view, but would be a very nice decorative touch..
