Post Bungalow fencing style?
Is there a particular style fencing that would be period correct or specific to bungalow-style homes? (i.e. shed roof bungalow w/ shed roof dormers circa 1919). I would like to build my own rustic-style picket fence over this winter for my side yard, but would like to keep it "correct" to my house/period style, if there was such a style. Thanks. - Jeff

Maybe this will help steer you in the right direction:

And here's another source (for ideas at least):

I got my fence from Hutchison Inc. It's A-11 galvanized double loop wire fencing. Very strong and very elegant and as it ages it disappears, and best of all THIS is the fence that they used a lot back then... AWEsome fence. Get tons of compliments...

That's the type of fence I see most often. If lucky you can still find it around town. Mine came from a cemetary, they were replacing it with wrought iron to keep out the drunks and never do wellers. I also called around to my local fencing contractors too and asked if they had any laying around. One never knows.

What kind of posts do you use with this? Is wood ok or is it supposed to be metal?

When I've seen original fences like this the posts were usually wood, often round and about 4" in diameter. The ones I remember were usually painted white.

Posts are galvanized metal--chain link posts and a runner pole at the top to keep people from bending the fence if they lean on it--which they will. As it mellows it looks great. if someone can tell me how to post pictures, i'll do it..

I just picked up a magazine at Borders yesterday called Arts & Crafts Homes and the Revival (when I was looking for the new American Bungalow Magazine). No date on this magazine but it is Vol III No 2. On pg 84 there is a article about the bungalow fence along with drawings and photos. The front cover lists the article as "In the Garden, creative space and fences"

We used the chainlink posts and also had some heavy gauge pipe cut and I must say. I wish that I'd convinced my dh to go with the wooden posts. The chainlink posts bend when you are stretching the fencing and we had to put cross beams at the ends or the whole thing would pull along with the fence. :: It came out well in the end but I do wish we'd done what I'd said. But then my fence was a pretty heavy gauge so maybe the newer fencing wouldn't be as tough as this stuff.
