Help me identify my new house.
Hello everyone! I'm currently in the process of buying an old house. Depending on who you ask, it was either built in 1918 or 1925. (the seller says 1918, the tax assessor says 1925.) The house is about 2500 square feet. One and a half floors. To be honest, I'm not even certain that it qualifies as a bungalow. However, I'm not having much luck with identifying the style of architecture. We'd love to do some restoration that is true to the homes architectural style. However, that may be difficult if we can't identify the architecture! Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

Re: Help me identify my new house.
The house appears to be kind of a hybrid, which actually isn't that unusual for the period, especially if the 1925 date is the correct one. The basic house form is a pretty traditional Colonial with the three equally spaced dormers. Also the exterior trim is consistent with a Colonial or Colonial revival. The porch, however, is much more bungalow like because of the square pillars and the fact that it is set off to one side of the front. A Colonial wouldn't have any covered porch. Also, the ground floor of the house appears to be stucco which is a typical bungalow era material. The interior is kind of a mixed bag as well with the trim more Colonial but the fireplace more bungalow. The mid 20's were kind of a transition period where the bungalow was falling out of favor and various revival forms were becoming popular, and I think your house is a good example of that transition. As to how to restore the house, I think you have kind of a free hand. The basic design is very sound and from the pictures, things appear to be in good shape. Except for maybe Art Deco, you could take your cues from almost any style popular in the 1915-1935 time period and be ok. I'd look at a lot of pictures of hosues from the same time period and decide what you like and go with that.
