Post how to remove old paint from terracotta tile porch
I am STILL renovating my 1915 Craftsman bungalow and am attempting to remove paint off the front porch surface which is terracotta tile. Oops paint remover has not worked, nor did ordinary pressure washing.
Thanks!

Don't know if this would work, but maybe you could try SmartStrip, from Dumond (the company that makes Peel Away strippers). We used it on our brick fireplace when methylene chloride stripper was not cutting it. We did three applications, leaving the SmartStrip on for several hours, then scrubbing wildly with metal brushes for hours.

I was skeptical that a gentle stripper could work, but it really got the job done. There is no visible paint or residue left now.

Best of luck!

I have had success with heat guns on terracotta and masonry as well as wood. You need 850 degree minimum output and wear leather gloves and probably a mask as you might have lead in the paint. Follow along with a putty knife right behind the heat gun. This works great for flat work. It can work for intricate design but you need to fashion pick like instruments to really get it all out; I've used dental picks to great success I'd shy away from using any kind of wire brush on terracotta - it could wreck the finish especially if used with vehemence.

Thanks everyone. We actually had good success with the Peel Away for masonry and followed up with some serious pressure washing. When clear of paint, we sealed the cracks and pits with concrete caulk.
